Basic Tools for Woodturning
Woodturning is a blend of the craftsmanship and artistry of the carpenter with the beauty and interest of the wood being used. Like any craft, the craftsman needs the right tools to achieve the finished products.
Here’s a quick rundown of the basic types of tools we use in the workshop.
1. Lathe
The lathe is the heart of any woodturning setup. The machine spins a wood block, allowing it to be shaped it with precision. Lathes come in three primary sizes – mini, midi, or full which determine the size of the projects capable.
2. Chisels and Gouges
A good set of chisels and gouges is used to shape the wood while it spins. Here are a few must-haves:
Roughing gouge: Used to turn your square block of wood into a round shape.
Spindle gouge: Great for detailed work on spindles, pens, and small items.
Bowl gouge: Perfect for hollowing out bowls and vessels.
Parting tool: This helps create sharp cuts and is used to separate your finished piece from the waste wood.
3. Sharpening System
Sharp tools are essential for clean cuts and smooth finishes. A sharpening system—like a bench grinder with a jig or a honing system—is a must to keep your chisels and gouges in top shape.
4. Calipers
When you’re turning pieces that need precise dimensions (like a pen or a matching set of table legs), calipers help you measure the thickness and diameter of your wood as you turn it.
5. Sanding Gear
No matter how skilled you are, sanding is a key part of woodturning. You’ll need a range of sandpaper grits, starting with coarse (around 80 grit) and finishing with fine (up to 400 or more) to get that perfect smooth finish.
6. Face Shield
Safety first! A good face shield will protect your face from wood shavings and dust. It’s an essential piece of gear that shouldn’t be overlooked.
